Discovering Inner peace seldom results from a successful career. Yet most people feel they must work hard in order to survive and provide for their families. It is simply all too easy to get caught up in a pattern that is not viable for the long term.
Modern lifestyles prompted the Dalai Lama to make this observation:
“Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health. And then he is so anxious about the future that he does not enjoy the present; the result being that he does not live in the present or the future; he lives as if he is never going to die, and then dies having never really lived.”
Inner Peace, a sense of meaning, vibrant health and the energy of Joy require living more consciously. For example having a career or a family is important, as you get to express your values and skills in these environments. Yet, without spiritual balance even the most loving family can drain your energy. Similarly, a career can grow in a way that monopolizes all your attention, thus depriving you of the nourishment that comes from balanced living. Our enthusiasm for life is nourished by variety, beauty, spiritual practice and simple physical activities.
The Dali Llama has also said: “I believe that the very purpose of life is to be happy. From the very core of our being, we desire contentment.” Happiness and contentment are indeed universal human needs. Yet many of us employ strategies that are often tragic.
For example, many people believe that a certain amount of money will reward them. That is, they trade their life force energy, their skills and personal resources for a payment. It is anticipated that the money earned can be transformed into a form of satisfaction.
This is a common orientation, however the consequence of such a lifestyle means that by the time you are in your 40’s, many have anxiety, hypertension, stress, depression, and blood sugar-level problems. The conventional doctor prescribes pharmaceuticals like anti-depressants, cholesterol lowering drugs and insulin to keep you alive.
This may keep you ‘in the game’ but are you really happy? If one continues with this lifestyle, then as you age the side effects of all those pills are kicking in. You will probably need more medications just to keep you in the game!
Do you really need a heart attack or other crisis to wake up?
Holistic living is the antidote for modern stress. It is a choice one makes to honor the ‘whole person’ and create contentment in the very process of living. Holistic living is more than taking care of the body; it includes an essential spiritual component.
The stress of modern life is in fact largely due to a spiritual disconnection. Spirituality is an honoring of the energy of things, the recognition we are more than our bodies. Through this recognition we become more aware of our Soul, our inner essence, and discover contentment.
We all have the ability to change. Old habits do not have to dominate. Our very DNA carries the wisdom of our species and our cosmic history! Harnessing that wisdom requires that we relax our grip on the outer world and rediscover our inner world.
The madness of modern living stops the moment you say with clarity, “enough’! That is, when you take time out to rediscover the joy in life, you will discover something essential.
